This program, which began in 2007 and is entering its final phase, involves the orchestration of a multidisciplinary team-historians, oceanographers, marine geophysicists and geochemists, environmental scientists, and biologists from academia, industry and government-and a variety of sophisticated equipment to accomplish a wide array of research objectives during short-duration and high-intensity field deployments.
The Hawaii Undersea Military Munitions Assessment (HUMMA) is multi-phase program undertaking the unique challenge of characterizing a historic deep-water (500 to 2,000 foot deep) chemical munitions disposal site to determine the potential impact of the ocean environment on sea-disposed munitions and of sea-disposed munitions on the ocean environment and those that use it.
